About this quote

This is a genuine canonical verse from the Dhammapada (verse 204), found in the Sukha Vagga (Chapter on Happiness). The Pali original reads: ārogyaparamā lābhā santuṭṭhiparamaṃ dhanaṃ | vissāsaparamā ñātī nibbāṇaṃ paramaṃ sukhaṃ. Most scholarly translations prefer "gain" to "gift" for lābhā, and "trustworthy relationship" or "kinsman" for the third element, since Nibbana appears as the fourth "greatest." The verse was spoken by the Buddha with reference to King Pasenadi of Kosala after observing the consequences of the king's excess in eating.
