"The mind is everything. What you think you become."
— Gautama Buddha
The Mind Is Everything What You
The mind is everything. What you think you become.
About this quote
The popular phrase "The mind is everything. What you think, you become" is not a faithful translation of the Dhammapada. The actual Pali opening — Manopubbangama dhamma — translates as "Mental phenomena are preceded by mind, have mind as their leader, are made by mind." The canonical teaching is that the ethical quality of one's mind (pure or impure) determines whether suffering or joy follows, not a claim that thoughts literally create reality. The popularized version traces to a poetic "rendering" by Thomas Byrom, whose work was shaped by Hindu Advaita Vedanta philosophy rather than strict Pali scholarship.
