"Walk on road. Walk right side, safe. Walk left side, safe. Walk middle, sooner or later get squish, just like grape."
— Mr. Miyagi
Walk On Road Walk Right Side
Walk on road. Walk right side, safe. Walk left side, safe. Walk middle, sooner or later get squish, just like grape.
About this quote
Spoken by Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) in The Karate Kid (1984), directed by John G. Avildsen. The scene occurs just before training begins in earnest: Daniel tells Miyagi he "guesses" he is ready, and Miyagi responds with this road metaphor to demand full commitment. The grape-squish image is a darkly comic illustration of the dangers of half-heartedness — a philosophical cousin of Yoda's "Do or do not, there is no try" from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980). Miyagi then extracts a "sacred pact" from Daniel: Miyagi will teach; Daniel will do exactly as told, no questions asked.
