About this quote

Spoken by Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) in The Karate Kid Part II (1986), the sequel directed by John G. Avildsen in which Miyagi returns to Okinawa and confronts his past while Daniel faces new adversaries. The line appears at around the fifty-minute mark and encapsulates one of the deepest principles of traditional martial arts: the most skilful defence is never to be in the path of danger at all. It echoes Sun Tzu's strategic teaching that supreme excellence lies in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.
