"Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, weak minds discuss people."
— Socrates
Strong Minds Discuss Ideas Average Minds
Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, weak minds discuss people.
About this quote
There is no evidence Socrates said this. The saying is more commonly attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt in a slightly different form — "Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people" — though even that attribution remains unverified. It has also been linked to 19th-century historian Henry Thomas Buckle. The concept does not appear in Plato's or Xenophon's accounts of Socrates.
