This line appears in Quiet Strength (1994). Parks articulated a philosophy of ethical witness: that one's life carries weight beyond its immediate context and that how one conducts oneself — in private as well as public — sets an example, whether intended or not. She applied this to her role in the civil rights movement, where she understood herself as one person in a long chain of people whose individual choices shaped the collective struggle.
