"Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power."
— Lao Tzu
Knowing Others Is Intelligence Knowing Yourself
Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power.
About this quote
From Chapter 33 of the Tao Te Ching, one of the few chapters that addresses the individual's inner life directly. Where much of the text treats external governance and the nature of the Tao, Chapter 33 turns inward: knowing others is presented as ordinary wisdom, but self-knowledge is framed as something rarer and more valuable. The distinction between mastering others (force) and mastering oneself (true power) echoes the Stoic tradition and anticipates ideas later explored by Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus.
