About this quote

This is the eleventh and final thesis in Theses on Feuerbach, a set of notes Marx wrote in 1845 and which Friedrich Engels published posthumously in 1888. The passage marks a decisive break from the contemplative tradition of philosophy: Marx argued that understanding the world is insufficient without transforming it. It became one of the foundational statements of Marxist praxis and is inscribed on Marx's tomb in Highgate Cemetery, London.
