The Ruling Ideas Of Each Age

This passage appears in The Communist Manifesto (1848), co-authored with Friedrich Engels. Marx argued that in every historical era, the dominant ideas in law, religion, politics, and culture reflect and reinforce the interests of the economically dominant class. The claim was part of his broader theory of base and superstructure — that economic relations form the foundation upon which legal and ideological institutions are built, not the other way around.
