This line appears in Wooden on Leadership (2005), one of the later books in which Wooden translated his coaching principles into lessons for organisations and leaders. He had observed throughout his career that talented athletes who lacked character — discipline, humility, and team commitment — frequently failed to sustain success, while players of more modest ability who possessed these qualities often exceeded expectations.
