With Heavens Aid I Have Conquered

With Heaven's aid I have conquered for you a huge empire. But my life was too short to achieve the conquest of the world.

About this quote

The Secret History of the Mongols (c. 1240) records that Genghis Khan addressed his sons on his deathbed in 1227, dividing the empire and urging them to maintain unity. The passage reflects the dynastic anxiety that consumed his final years: Chinggis had built an empire stretching from China to the Caspian Sea, but knew that without unity among his heirs it would fragment. His concern was prescient — within a generation his successors had divided the empire into four competing khanates, though the Mongol world-system he created continued to shape Eurasia for another century.
