And yet it moves.
About this quote
"E pur si muove" — "And yet it moves" — is among the most famous phrases in the history of science, supposedly whispered by Galileo Galilei after his 1633 recantation before the Inquisition, defiantly affirming that the Earth orbits the Sun. It is almost certainly apocryphal: the saying was first reported by the writer Giuseppe Baretti in 1757, over a century after Galileo's death, and no contemporary account mentions it. Galileo was under house arrest from 1633 until his death in 1642 and would have had strong reasons not to defy the Inquisition publicly.
