That Which Does Not Kill Us

That which does not kill us makes us stronger.

— Friedrich Nietzsche

About this quote

From the "Maxims and Arrows" chapter of Twilight of the Idols (1889), aphorism 8 — one of Nietzsche's last books, written in the final months before his mental breakdown. The German original reads "Was mich nicht umbringt, macht mich stärker." Nietzsche intended it as a statement about psychological fortitude and the value of suffering in forging character, closely connected to his concept of amor fati. The aphorism is frequently quoted out of context and stripped of its nuance; Nietzsche was not making a blanket claim about physical survival, but about the capacity for self-overcoming in the face of hardship.
