— David Ricardo
The Opinions Which Milton Locke And
The opinions which Milton, Locke, and others have so ably sustained, I firmly believe to be correct.
About this quote
From a letter to Thomas Malthus written in 1817, in which Ricardo expressed his views on political philosophy. Ricardo was a disciple of Adam Smith on economic liberalism and also held broadly Whig political views; he sat in Parliament from 1819 until his death in 1823, where he advocated for free trade, currency reform, and parliamentary reform. His reference to Milton and Locke indicates the intellectual tradition he placed himself within.
