Happiness Depends Upon Ourselves

This paraphrases Aristotle's argument in Nicomachean Ethics, Book I, where he defines happiness (eudaimonia) as "an activity of the soul in accordance with virtue." He distinguishes his view from those who equate happiness with pleasure, wealth, or honor, arguing instead that it results from exercising rational virtue — something within our own power.
