"I am indebted to my father for living, but to my teacher for living well."
— Alexander the Great
I Am Indebted To My Father
I am indebted to my father for living, but to my teacher for living well.
About this quote
Plutarch records this saying in his Life of Alexander, where Alexander the Great explicitly names Aristotle as the teacher to whom he owed the art of living well — contrasted with Philip II of Macedon, who gave him life itself. Alexander studied under Aristotle at Mieza for roughly three years from age 13, receiving instruction in philosophy, medicine, rhetoric, and science. When Alexander later marched east, he maintained a correspondence with Aristotle and reportedly sent botanical and biological specimens back to Athens for study.
