It appears to be a paraphrase or elaboration of a verified 1946 Einstein telegram to the New York Times about atomic weapons, in which he wrote that "a new type of thinking is essential if mankind is to survive." The genuine statement is narrower in scope; the popular version is likely a later embellishment.
