This saying is widely attributed to Sun Tzu but does not appear verbatim in any authoritative translation of The Art of War. Scholars at Wikiquote note that the sentiment — that acting on opportunities generates more opportunities — arguably contradicts Sun Tzu's disciplined, pre-conditions-based approach to engagement, in which a general waits for favorable circumstances rather than seizing opportunities opportunistically. A thematically related but differently worded variant ("opportunities increase as they are taken") appears in some published translations.
