Difficulties Strengthen The Mind As Labor

Difficulties strengthen the mind, as labor does the body.

About this quote

De Providentia was written for Lucilius and addresses a question central to Stoic theology: why do bad things happen to good people? Seneca's answer in Chapter 2 is that adversity is not punishment but training - the universe exercises the virtuous the way a trainer pushes an athlete. The analogy between mental and physical strength became a cornerstone of Stoic resilience thinking, picked up centuries later by Marcus Aurelius in his Meditations.
