"A man who does not think for himself does not think at all."
— Oscar Wilde
A Man Who Does Not Think
A man who does not think for himself does not think at all.
About this quote
From Wilde's essay The Soul of Man Under Socialism (1891), published in The Fortnightly Review. The line appears within a passage arguing that true individuality requires intellectual independence: "It is not selfish to think for oneself. A man who does not think for himself does not think at all. It is grossly selfish to require of one's neighbour that he should think in the same way, and hold the same opinions." The essay is one of the most sustained defenses of individual freedom in Victorian literature.
