"The barriers are not erected which can say to aspiring talents and industry, 'Thus far and no farther.'"
— Ludwig van Beethoven
The Barriers Are Not Erected Which
The barriers are not erected which can say to aspiring talents and industry, 'Thus far and no farther.'
About this quote
From a letter to Franz Wegeler dated 29 June 1801 — the earlier of two famous letters to Wegeler that year, in which Beethoven first confided about his hearing loss. Having listed his professional successes and financial security, he turned to his "jealous demon" of deteriorating health. Despite this, the letter ends on a defiant note, asserting that talent and industry would carry him beyond the obstacles that class or circumstance might place in another man's path.
