Ludwig van Beethoven Portrait

"Don't only practice your art, but force your way into its secrets; art deserves that, for it and knowledge can raise man to the Divine."

— Ludwig van Beethoven

Dont Only Practice Your Art But

Don't only practice your art, but force your way into its secrets; art deserves that, for it and knowledge can raise man to the Divine.

— Ludwig van Beethoven

About this quote

From a letter to Emilie M., a young admirer, dated 17 July 1812. The original German reads: "Fahre fort, übe nicht allein die Kunst, sondern dringe auch in ihr Inneres; sie verdient es, denn nur die Kunst und die Wissenschaft erhöhen den Menschen bis zur Gottheit." Beethoven wrote it at Teplitz, where he was taking a cure that summer — the same trip during which he met Goethe and likely composed his "Immortal Beloved" letters.
