This quote is reported by Bettina von Arnim in a letter to Goethe dated 28 May 1810, later published in Goethe's Correspondence with a Child (1835). The Beethoven-Haus Bonn, the authoritative research institution, notes it is "doubtful whether Beethoven really expressed himself in this way," as von Arnim was known to romanticize and embellish her accounts of the composer and no autograph source survives.
