Like the "higher revelation" quote, this line is reported by Bettina von Arnim in her 28 May 1810 letter to Goethe, subsequently published in Goethe's Correspondence with a Child (1835). The Beethoven-Haus Bonn applies the same caveat to both — that von Arnim was putting words in Beethoven's mouth, and the authenticity of her accounts of their conversations cannot be confirmed from independent sources.
