He Who Knows That Enough Is

He who knows that enough is enough will always have enough.

About this quote

From Chapter 46 of the Tao Te Ching, which opens by contrasting a world governed by the Tao — where horses are used for farming — with one where war prevails and horses are bred for battle. The second half of the chapter turns to the inner life: no catastrophe is greater than not knowing contentment, and no fault greater than the desire to acquire. The phrase "he who knows that enough is enough will always have enough" (知足者富, literally "one who knows sufficiency is wealthy") is one of the text's most direct formulations of the Taoist ideal of sufficiency.
