Westinghouse's career was characterized by a willingness to risk capital on unproven technologies: he invested heavily in AC electrical systems at a time when Thomas Edison's DC infrastructure dominated the market, and he backed Nikola Tesla's patents for AC motors when few others saw commercial potential in them. The 1893 Niagara Falls power project — a Westinghouse-Tesla AC installation — proved the technology at scale and opened the era of widespread electrical power.
