A line from Martin's standup act, representative of the absurdist, deliberately stupid style he developed in the mid-1970s. Martin built much of his comedy on the persona of a cheerfully idiotic man-child, and the joke works by setting up a seemingly profound observation only to complete it with the most banal possible answer. This kind of anti-joke became his signature and helped distinguish him from the social commentary style of contemporaries like George Carlin.
