This saying is attributed to Isaac Newton in many collections but has not been traced to a specific letter, published work, or documented conversation. Newton's scientific method was in fact characterized by hypotheses tested against observation — he famously wrote "hypotheses non fingo" (I frame no hypotheses) in the Principia — though in practice he used bold speculation extensively in his work on gravity, light, and alchemy.
