He Knows Nothing And He Thinks

He knows nothing; and he thinks he knows everything. That points clearly to a political career.

About this quote

This line is spoken by the munitions manufacturer Andrew Undershaft in Act 3 of Major Barbara (1906), describing his estranged son Stephen, who has been struggling to identify a useful career. Undershaft is one of Shaw's characteristic "realist" figures whose function is to deliver uncomfortable truths in comic form. Major Barbara premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in London in November 1905 under the direction of Harley Granville-Barker, and the play's sharp treatment of philanthropy, power, and morality made it one of Shaw's most controversial works.
