About this quote
Vatican Saying 68 encapsulates Epicurus's philosophy of autarkeia (self-sufficiency). Epicurus distinguished between natural and necessary desires (food, shelter, friendship), natural but unnecessary desires (fine food, luxury), and vain desires (fame, wealth, power). Only the first category reliably produces pleasure; the others generate anxiety and dependency. He argued that the person who craves everything will always feel deprived, while the person who trains themselves to find satisfaction in simple things commands an inexhaustible source of pleasure.
