Any Person Capable Of Angering You

Any person capable of angering you becomes your master.

— Epictetus

About this quote

A paraphrase from Section 28 of the Enchiridion. Epictetus frames anger as a voluntary surrender of autonomy - by reacting, you grant another person control over your inner state. This inversion of the power dynamic was especially pointed coming from a former slave who had endured physical abuse. Marcus Aurelius adopted the same reasoning in Meditations Book 11, reminding himself that anger harms the angry more than the offender.
