"Following the light of the sun, we left the Old World."
— Christopher Columbus
Following The Light Of The Sun
Following the light of the sun, we left the Old World.
About this quote
This is a paraphrase drawn from the abstract of Christopher Columbus's journal of the first voyage, made by the Dominican friar Bartolomé de las Casas, since Columbus's original journal is lost. The entry for around October 3, 1492 records the fleet sailing westward, having left the Canary Islands on September 6. Columbus navigated by dead reckoning and kept two distance logs — one accurate, one deliberately understated to prevent his crew from panicking about how far they had traveled from Spain.
