"In anger we should refrain both from speech and action."
— Pythagoras
In Anger We Should Refrain Both
In anger we should refrain both from speech and action.
About this quote
Attributed to Pythagoras by Diogenes Laertius in Lives of the Eminent Philosophers (3rd century AD), the principal ancient source for Pythagorean sayings. Pythagoras left no surviving writings, and Diogenes compiled his biography and maxims more than seven centuries after the philosopher's death. This saying on restraint in anger reflects the Pythagorean ethical emphasis on self-governance: daily practices of silence and evening self-examination were used by members of his school to cultivate mastery over impulse.
