"Friends are as companions on a journey, who ought to aid each other to persevere in the road to a happier life."
— Pythagoras
Friends Are As Companions On A
Friends are as companions on a journey, who ought to aid each other to persevere in the road to a happier life.
About this quote
Attributed to Pythagoras via Iamblichus's Life of Pythagoras (c. 300 AD), one of the principal Neoplatonist accounts of the philosopher and his community. The Pythagorean school at Croton was organised as a close-knit brotherhood with shared property and obligations; "Friends have all things in common" (koinà tà tōn phílōn) was one of its founding principles. No writings by Pythagoras survive, and Iamblichus was writing more than eight centuries after his subject's death.
