The sole aim of journalism should be service.
About this quote
From An Autobiography: The Story of My Experiments with Truth, Chapter 89, "Indian Opinion." Gandhi launched Indian Opinion in June 1903 in South Africa to communicate with the Indian immigrant community. In the autobiography he reflects that within the journal's first month he recognized that a newspaper that chases profit or sensation betrays its readers. He continues: "The newspaper press is a great power, but just as an unchained torrent of water submerges whole countrysides... an uncontrolled pen serves but to destroy." He edited the journal without pay for years and eventually moved its printing press to the Phoenix Settlement he founded near Durban.
