"Truth has drawn me into the field of politics; and I can say without the slightest hesitation that those who say religion has nothing to do with politics do not know what religion means."
— Mahatma Gandhi
Truth Has Drawn Me Into The
Truth has drawn me into the field of politics; and I can say without the slightest hesitation that those who say religion has nothing to do with politics do not know what religion means.
About this quote
From the closing chapter ("Farewell") of An Autobiography: The Story of My Experiments with Truth, written as Gandhi's final reflection on his life's purpose. He explains that his devotion to Truth — his spiritual pursuit of Satya — was what pulled him into politics, not personal ambition: to love "the meanest of creation as oneself," one cannot remain outside any field of human life. The book, originally serialized in Gujarati from 1925 and published in English in 1927, ends with Gandhi's prayer that God grant him "the boon of Ahimsa in mind, word and deed" — a measure of how far his political life remained rooted in spiritual conviction.
