Alexander Graham Bell delivered this speech at the Navy League Convention in Washington, D.C. in 1916, during a period of intense international competition in aviation following the Wright Brothers' 1903 flights. Bell had himself been deeply involved in aeronautical research through the Aerial Experiment Association (1907–1909). The statement anticipated the strategic importance of air power that would define both world wars.
