Three Things Are Necessary For The
Three things are necessary for the salvation of man: to know what he ought to believe, to know what he ought to desire, and to know what he ought to do.
About this quote
From the Two Precepts of Charity (Collationes in duo praecepta caritatis et in decem legis praecepta, c. 1273), a series of sermons Aquinas delivered late in his life. The tripartite structure — what to believe, what to desire, what to do — organises the Christian moral life around faith (fides), hope (spes), and charity (caritas), the three theological virtues that run throughout the Summa Theologica. Aquinas died in March 1274, making these sermons among his final works.
