About this quote

This final petition of the prayer attributed to Sir Francis Drake has become the most widely quoted part of the text, used in everything from memorial services to business addresses. The prayer's provenance remains uncertain — no definitive 16th-century manuscript connecting it to Drake has been identified — but its spirit matches Drake's documented career: he was the second person to circumnavigate the globe (1577–1580), led the pre-emptive attack on Cadiz (1587), and served as a vice admiral against the Spanish Armada (1588). He died of dysentery off Puerto Rico in 1596 during his final Caribbean expedition.
