"I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God's hands, that I still possess."
— Martin Luther
I Have Held Many Things In
I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God's hands, that I still possess.
About this quote
This sentiment is traced to a letter Luther wrote to Justus Jonas the Elder from Feste Coburg on 29 June 1530, during the Diet of Augsburg (Weimarer Ausgabe, Briefe V, p. 409). In the original German and Latin, Luther reflects on losing many things he had grasped tightly while finding that whatever he had entrusted to God remained intact. The widely circulated English version is a smooth paraphrase rather than a direct translation of the mixed-language original.
