"The demon that you can swallow gives you its power."
— Joseph Campbell
The Demon That You Can Swallow
The demon that you can swallow gives you its power.
About this quote
From The Power of Myth (1988), the book based on Campbell's conversations with journalist Bill Moyers. The line follows Campbell's extended discussion of Friedrich Nietzsche's concept of Amor fati — "love of your fate" — and his argument that affirming every element of one's life, including its most painful chapters, is the highest act of courage. Swallowing the demon is Campbell's mythological metaphor for this integration: the adversity, trauma, or fear that threatens to destroy you, if faced and assimilated rather than fled, transforms into a source of strength that could not have been obtained any other way.
