"I believe in the dignity of labor, whether with head or hand; that the world owes no man a living but that it owes every man an opportunity to make a living."
— John D. Rockefeller
I Believe In The Dignity Of
I believe in the dignity of labor, whether with head or hand; that the world owes no man a living but that it owes every man an opportunity to make a living.
About this quote
This statement is from the "I Believe" credo composed and delivered on radio by John D. Rockefeller Jr. (1874–1960), son of the oil magnate, in a July 1941 USO broadcast; it was later inscribed on a plaque at Rockefeller Center in 1962. The credo is quoted in John D. Rockefeller, Jr.: A Portrait (1956) by Raymond Fosdick. Attributing it to John D. Rockefeller Sr. (1839–1937), as many sources do, appears to be an error: the documented author is the son, who devoted his life to philanthropy and civic affairs including the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg and donating the land for the United Nations headquarters.
