"Where there is devotional music, God is always at hand with his gracious presence."
— Johann Sebastian Bach
Where There Is Devotional Music God
Where there is devotional music, God is always at hand with his gracious presence.
About this quote
Bach wrote this annotation in his personal copy of the Abraham Calov Bible Commentary, a Lutheran study Bible he owned and marked extensively. The annotation is among several Bach made throughout the three-volume set, which he acquired around 1733. Scholars discovered the annotated Bible in the United States in 1934; its marginal notes offer rare direct evidence of Bach's theological convictions and his understanding of the relationship between music and worship.
