Joel Coen has made this distinction in interviews about the relationship between screenwriting and filmmaking. For the Coen Brothers — who write, direct, and sometimes edit their own films — the screenplay is a necessary but insufficient document: it is a set of instructions for making something that exists only in its final visual form. Coen has noted that their scripts often read quite differently from the finished films.
