"If a thing is useful they call it work, if useless they call it play. One is as hard as the other. One can be just as much a game as the other."
— Claude Hopkins
If A Thing Is Useful They
If a thing is useful they call it work, if useless they call it play. One is as hard as the other. One can be just as much a game as the other.
About this quote
From My Life in Advertising (1927), where Hopkins reflected on what had driven him to work at extreme intensity throughout his career. Hopkins was known for arriving at the office before dawn and working longer hours than anyone around him, yet he denied this was sacrifice. He argued that the labeling of activities as work or play says more about the labeler's attitude than about the activity itself.
