I Am Death And I Make

This line comes from "Death as Godfather" (Der Gevatter Tod) in the Grimms' Kinder- und Hausmärchen (1812–1857). In the tale, Death appears as a godfather who gives a doctor the power to know whether a patient will live or die — but enforces his levelling role absolutely when the time comes. The story belongs to a tradition of tales personifying Death as impartial and incorruptible, indifferent to rank or wealth.
